OMAC Data Governance Initiative 2022

OMAC’s latest initiative brings together 53 industry professionals to establish a framework and guidelines to protect precious proprietary information while enabling secure data sharing for efficiently solving problems, mining insights, and capturing the highest value from data-supported capabilities. 

31 August 2022 - Architecting Data Hierarchy

The discussion focused on how data should be constructed and made available to the many different organizations requiring access. The goal was to review the current state and identify critical factors when developing a methodology and structure for data. Since each company will have unique requirements, this group’s objective was to provide guidance on the essential aspects to consider and not try and develop a single solution.

  • Regulations, industry standards and norms to consider when developing data governance guidelines
  • Whether or not security classification be associated with data that limits which users can see or use the data
  • How OT Data Governance is different from other guidelines in the Enterprise area?
  • Should there be a universal data definition?

Identifying Individuals & Organizations that use Industrial Data

Members discussed the responses from the fourth survey on:

  • Third-party companies that use plant floor data and for what purposes
  • Multiple organizations sharing responsibilities
  • Percentage of individuals or organizations focused on each level of the PURDUE MODEL in the three time periods (20 years ago, today, 10 years from now)
  • Guidelines that may improve the coordination or efficiency of these organization

20 July 2022 - Identifying Applications That Use Plant Floor Data

Participants reviewed the responses from the third survey on applications that use plant floor data and discussed:

  • Typical challenges to utilizing plant data
  • Key points that application developers should be aware of when developing big-data applications
  • Factors that make some applications better than others
  • Whether or not applications should use a common data source or should each application use a separate data source
  • Applications that require separate data sources that are unique to a device or system
  • Key factors when using common data sources

  • Whether applications provide a list of all data (common & unique) used?
  • Guidelines to follow when using processed data from third-party applications
  • The percentage of applications that can be grouped in the following categories: 
    • performance and control
    • quality and efficiency
    • diagnostics and troubleshooting
    • scheduling and planning

  • Used of data and the challenges when installing equipment or a news system into an existing environment
  • Sources of data that are less reliable or dependable than others
  • Issues that could occur when transmitting data from the source to a specific destination
  • Importance of Data Governance policies

– Definition of data, types of data and additional terms relating that should be added to the list.

– Data boundaries for the projects and areas to be considered. 

– The Impact of Industrial IoT on Data Governance

– Attributes associated with data and their importance

– Rules when creating manipulated data

– Significance of well-defined and structured meaning of data

– Importance of understanding the source of data when used by multiple systems

– Issues with data that leads to uncertainty and problems

18 May 2022 - Kickoff Meeting

In this meeting, each of the 53 participants had an opportunity to introduce themselves. The workgroup leader, Mark Fondl, reviewed the plan and cadence for the upcoming sessions. As well as discussed questions to be included in the first survey. 

Members are encouraged to actively participate by attending virtual meetings. 

— Must take time to complete the survey questions

— May assist in the creation of questions for online surveys
